TEF Canada writing tasks with annotated sample answers

Eight original practice tasks, four for each section of the writing test. Each page gives the task as you would see it, a plan, the vocabulary of the topic, the traps that cost points and a sample answer at NCLC 7, with margin notes on what gets it there and what holds it back.

Section A: continue a news article

You read the start of a news story and write what happens next, in several paragraphs. 25 minutes, at least 80 words.

Section B: give and defend your opinion

You react to a statement in a letter, a forum reply or an email, with at least three developed arguments. 35 minutes, at least 200 words.

How the samples were levelled

Each sample answer was written for this site to show NCLC 7 features, including the kind of errors a real NCLC 7 text still has. We graded each one three times with the Allez7 grader and compared it with reference scripts of known level. A page states a level only when the grader gives it in most runs. These are AI estimates, not marks from a TEF examiner.

All tasks and sample answers are original practice material written by Allez7. They are not official TEF items and do not reproduce any exam.
