Section A practice: a computer outage sends city hall back to paper

A computer outage paralyses every service at city hall, and instead of closing, the staff choose an old-fashioned solution. Continue the article. A technology topic where the interest is human: how people cope without their screens.

The task

How to tackle it

A plan

  1. Paragraph 1: the old-fashioned solution

Say what the « solution à l'ancienne » is, concretely: registers, pens, cheques. Add how people react.

  2. Paragraph 2: the day at the counter

A scene with numbers (the queue at noon) and a quote from an employee or a resident.

  3. Paragraph 3: the cause and the end

End of day: how many files were handled, what caused the outage, when the system comes back, what happens to the paper records.

Tenses and register

  • Passé composé and imparfait for the day itself; plus-que-parfait for what was done by evening (« avaient été traités »).
  • The passive voice for what happens to things: « le système a été réparé », « les données seront saisies ».
  • Future for what comes next: « seront entrées d'ici la fin de la semaine ».
  • Neutral third-person register throughout.

Traps that cost points

  • On this task

Don't stop at the outage. A text that only describes the problem and never says how the day went or how it ended feels unfinished, and a news story without an ending loses points on task and coherence.

  • Write the rest of the news story. An opinion, a letter or a comment on the topic is the wrong type of text, and it caps the task and coherence scores.
  • Don't retell the start of the article. Any run of 5 or more words taken from the task doesn't count towards your 80 words, and an answer that mostly restates the task earns almost nothing.
  • Write at least 80 words of your own. Under 72 words, the task score loses a point; under 40, the result drops to the lowest band.
  • Stay on the story the article sets up. Writing about the theme but missing the event it announces counts as partly off topic.

These are the rules the Allez7 grader applies in code. The TEF does not publish its length rule; the grader follows DELF practice.
