Section A practice: a heat wave keeps the pools open until midnight

After five days of extreme heat, a city keeps its three public pools open until midnight, and on the first night the staff face something they did not expect. Write the rest of the article. Climate stories are frequent practice topics: this one tests whether you can tell a problem and its solution in order.

The task

How to tackle it

A plan

  1. Paragraph 1: the unexpected problem

The article announces a « situation imprévue »: say what it was, when, and what the staff did right away.

  2. Paragraph 2: an explanation

Someone in charge explains why it happened, with a quote. This is where you show cause and consequence.

  3. Paragraph 3: the measures

What changes for the next nights: limits, schedules, help for the people waiting. End on the forecast or the next step.

Tenses and register

  • Passé composé for the events of the night, imparfait for the situation (« il y avait plus de 400 personnes »).
  • Present tense for the measures now in place (« les entrées sont limitées »).
  • Near future or future for what comes next (« la chaleur va continuer », « continuera »).
  • A news register: numbers, times, a named source; no « je ».

Traps that cost points

  • On this task

The lead already says the pools stay open until midnight. Don't spend your first sentences repeating it: words copied from the task don't count, and the story starts with the unexpected problem.

  • Write the rest of the news story. An opinion, a letter or a comment on the topic is the wrong type of text, and it caps the task and coherence scores.
  • Don't retell the start of the article. Any run of 5 or more words taken from the task doesn't count towards your 80 words, and an answer that mostly restates the task earns almost nothing.
  • Write at least 80 words of your own. Under 72 words, the task score loses a point; under 40, the result drops to the lowest band.
  • Stay on the story the article sets up. Writing about the theme but missing the event it announces counts as partly off topic.
