Section A practice: an 84-year-old runs his first half-marathon
At 84, Gérard Fortin lines up for his first half-marathon, and the worried organisers plan to follow him closely. Continue the article: how does the race go, and how does it end? A health and sport story that rewards concrete details and one good quote.
The task

How to tackle it
A plan
Paragraph 1: the organisers' plan
The article ends on the organisers' worry, so answer it first: who follows him, with what? Then a first hint of how things go.
Paragraph 2: the race
One or two moments during the race (a kilometre marker, a gesture towards another runner) and a quote from him. This is where the story becomes his.
Paragraph 3: the finish
His time, the crowd, the family. Keep it factual: a news article shows the emotion through facts and quotes, not adjectives.
Paragraph 4: after the race
Why he started running, and what comes next: an invitation, a new goal. A closing fact rounds off the article.
Tenses and register
- Passé composé for the steps of the race, imparfait for the background (« qui avait mal aux jambes »).
- Plus-que-parfait for what happened before the story (« son médecin le lui avait conseillé »).
- Reported speech after a past verb: « elle m'a dit qu'elle voulait » (not « veut »).
- Numbers and times written the way a newspaper does: « 2 heures 55 minutes », « au kilomètre 15 ».
Traps that cost points
On this task
Don't write a speech about the benefits of sport for seniors. The task asks what happened next in the race; general reflections on health belong to Section B, not here.
- Write the rest of the news story. An opinion, a letter or a comment on the topic is the wrong type of text, and it caps the task and coherence scores.
- Don't retell the start of the article. Any run of 5 or more words taken from the task doesn't count towards your 80 words, and an answer that mostly restates the task earns almost nothing.
- Write at least 80 words of your own. Under 72 words, the task score loses a point; under 40, the result drops to the lowest band.
- Stay on the story the article sets up. Writing about the theme but missing the event it announces counts as partly off topic.
These are the rules the Allez7 grader applies in code. The TEF does not publish its length rule; the grader follows DELF practice.
