Section B practice: 40 hours of volunteering to graduate?

A school board member proposes that every student do forty hours of volunteering to get their high school diploma. You write to the readers' letters page to say whether you agree. An education topic where both sides are easy to defend, which makes it good practice for choosing a position and holding it.

The task

How to tackle it

A plan

  1. Opening: who you are and your position

One sentence on the proposal, one on why you are writing (your experience), and your position stated plainly: for or against.

  2. Three arguments, one paragraph each

Each paragraph opens with the argument, then gives a concrete example: a club, a student, a food bank. The TEF asks for at least three developed arguments.

  3. A concession

Grant what is true in the other side (volunteering is a rich experience) and turn it into a proposal of your own.

  4. Conclusion and letter closing

One short sentence that sums up your position, then a letter formula and your name.

Position and connectors

  • State the position early: « je ne suis pas d'accord avec cette idée », « je suis convaincu que… ».
  • Ordinal connectors are fine at this level: « premièrement, deuxièmement, enfin ».
  • A concession connector: « je reconnais que… », « certes… mais », « quand même ».
  • A formal letter frame: « Madame, Monsieur, » … « Veuillez agréer… ».

Traps that cost points

  • On this task

Count your arguments. « Students don't want to » and « it's not real volunteering » are the same idea: two paragraphs on one argument still count as one, and fewer than three caps the task score.

  • Develop at least 3 distinct arguments. With fewer, the task score is capped, however good the French.
  • Write the type of text the task asks for (letter, forum reply, email), with a greeting and a closing. A story or a general essay is the wrong type of text.
  • Don't copy the statement. Any run of 5 or more words taken from the task doesn't count towards your 200 words: quote a few words at most.
  • Write at least 200 words. Under 180 words, the task score loses a point; under 100, the result drops to the lowest band.

These are the rules the Allez7 grader applies in code. The TEF does not publish its length rule; the grader follows DELF practice.

Madame, Monsieur,
